Without a doubt, exercise can be one of your most relaxing activities. If you have a dog, you know what I mean. What does every dog do everyday that involves a very basic exercise? It’s known in yoga as Down Dog. It’s a stretch pose. It releases tension in the lower back while stretching the hamstrings.

Recently, I twisted my my lower back a good one and was locked up and in pain for several days. My son reminded me of the lower back exercises in Tim Ferriss’s book, The Four Hour Body. One of the static exercises is to lay on your back on  the floor with knees propped up on a footstool. Arms outstretched on the floor at 45 degree angles with thumbs touching the floor. Just lay there for five minutes allowing your lower back muscle to cool it and relax. The thumbs actually control the alignment in your lower back. That is exercise. By relaxing, I am exercising. Relaxing and aligning allows function.

Be well,
