I spent the day with the members of an upscale health and fitness gym. I had a sales table for supplements and got to meet a lot of the folks. I was thunderstruck by a couple of things.

First, people at this establishment pay $90 a month membership. On average this gym’s members are about 56 years old. Contrast this with a regular gym whose average member’s age is 26. These boomers and seniors are mostly in pretty good shape. It’s rather amazing to see a host of people in their 50s and 60s not carrying extra weight.

There are plenty of $10 and $20 a month gyms out there but the members are not nearly as committed. So in an anecdotal sense, I could say the more you spend on your health, the more seriously you take your level of health and fitness, the better results you can expect.

The next big impression I had was that these folks really enjoyed their gym, classes and community.

There was an overriding complaint however. Several people mentioned a lack of energy. Now it’s true as we age we slow down. In every sense the metabolism slows. By age 30, several internal bodily functions begin to slow. We accumulate fat and begin to lose muscle. It’s a natural occurrence.  Yet, the body is amazingly adaptive. This trend of fat build up and muscle decline can be reversed in as little as 30 minutes a day.

You know what I am going to say next… Yes, it’s about getting the heart rate up for at least 30 minutes a day and also doing some weight training. It should be done in a safe manner and under supervision until you get the hang of it. The great thing is that most gyms provide new members with one or two free fitness coach consulations, to teach new members how to use the equipment safely and properly.
